The U.S. Post Office has announced that effective June 30, 2002 the zip code for the Highlands will change from 89511 to 89521.

The U.S. Postal Service now recognizes "VC Highlands" as a proper city name for ZIP Code 89521. Residents of the Highlands may use VC Highlands, NV 89521 or Reno, NV 89521 for their mailing address. The Post Office prefers "VC Highlands".

Official information on Storey County school closings due to bad weather can be found on Channel 8 (KOLO) and many of the Reno radio stations.
If there is an emergency such as fire, etc., radio station KKOH (AM-780) is the official area emergency information radio station.

The Board has designed and ordered a vehicle decal that identifies you as a Highlands resident. The cost is $1.00 per decal. The decal is placed on your left lower front windshield. If the Highlands are evacuated due to fire or other emergency, this decal will make it easier for police and/or other emergency personnel to identify you as a Highlands resident and allow you to return to your home when the emergency is over. The decals may be purchased at the Highlands Fire Station.

The Virginia Highlands Volunteer Fire Department will make and install a reflective address marker to be placed in front of your home. The reflective marker enables visitors, delivery vehicles, service people, fire, police, ambulances, and others to find your house more easily. The cost for a sign is $15.00 and for a sign/post (installed) the cost is $20.00. Stop by the fire station on Cartwright Road to order yours.

You can still dump your tree trimmings, brush, and other vegetation in the large dumping area next to the fire station. This is for vegetation only and is only for residents of the Highlands.
